Dan Haywood & Las Mitras gig review

DAN HAYWOOD OF PILL FANGS & LAS MITRAS GIG – 9TH JUNE VINYL CAFÉ CARLISLE

LATER THAN SCHEDULED BUT WELL WORTH THE WAIT! AS THE APPRECIATIVE CROWD WHO WAITIED PATIENTLY ON A SUNDAY AFTERNOON ENJOYED PRE-GIG EXPECTATION. FRESH FROM PLAYING 2 GIGS THE DAY BEFORE BUT NONE THE WORSE FOR IT AS THEY ARRIVED OVER 40 MINS LATER THAN EXPECTED, QUICKLY SET UP AND SOUNDCHECKED WITH THE EXPERIENCE OF ATTITUDE OF A GROUP OF MUSICIANS WHO KNEW THEY WERE ABOUT TO ASTONISH AND ENTERTAIN IN EQUAL MEASURE. WELL SEASONED TO KICK ASS!

DAN HAYWOOD THE MAN BEHIND PILL FANGS WITH ALREADY 2 GLORIOUS ALBUMS UNDER THEIR BELT – ‘PF1 & PF2’, GOT US OFF TO A BLINDING START ALONE WITH HIS FENDER JAGUAR GUITAR GIVING IT SOME CLASS TALKING HEAD/VELVET VIBES ALONG WITH INSTANCES OF A BILL CALLAHAN/SMOG GIG AT TIMES WITH WORDS TWISTING AROUND ANGULAR GUITAR BREAKS, CHILLED CHORD STRUCTURES NESTLING AMONGST AN EXPLOSIVE ENERGY THAT KEPT EVERYONE ON THE EDGE OF THERE SEATS. FOR THE UNITITIATED EVERYONE SEEMED TO DIG IT COMPLETELY, THE OVERIDING SENSE OF STEPPING BACK TO HAVING WITNESSED A TELEVISION GIG WITH TOM VERLAINE STANDING ALONE PLAYING MARQUE MOON SOLO WOULD BE VERY APT. BUT NO LESS A MAN COMPLETELY IN HIS OWN MOMENT AND RELEVENT FOR THESE TIMES.

A CLOSE BOND WAS EVIDENT AS DAN INTRODUCED LAS MITRAS, A YOUNG 3 PIECE BASED IN GLASGOW WITH PRESENCE AND ATTITUDE IN EQUAL MEASURE. A BAND GIVING IT IN BUCKETS MEMORABLY IN A B52/GO GO’S VIBE, SURF NOIR PIXIES WITH KIM DEAL, BREEDERS SEEKING A BRIGHTER FUTURE OUT OF THE DECAYING PAST. ALREADY MEMORABLE LIVE DISPLAYING THEIR RECENT EP ‘ONDA LUNGA’ WITH SONGS LIKE ‘CRAB HAVEN’ CREATING AUDIENCE PARTICIPTION WITH FRANETIC HANDLIKE PINCER MOVEMENTS PERFECTLY ADDING TO THE BANDS ALREADY CRAFTED FOLLOWERS, THE SONG ‘BLACKCURRANT WINE’ RESOLUTLEY SPRAWLING AND MAZZY STAR LIKE CHILLED THE AUDIENCE INTO AN ABSORBTION THEN WITH SOME BUILDING SPORADICALLY TOOK THE SONG INTO POST PUNK PRE-PIXIES BRAVODO TO KNOCK IT DOWN AGAIN, IN A VERY GOOD WAY INDEED! WITH ALL OF THIS AND CERTAINLY MORE, THEIR FOLLOWING, MOMENTUM AND BELONGING WILL ONLY GROW WITH FURTHER LAS MITRAS APPRECIATION.
